In this situation, the owner wanted a more formal looking pond and chose black slate tile.  Since the slate is porous to begin with it was decided that Pond Shield Clear would be used as the final coating to completely seal all of the tile.  Any coating that was exposed above the water line was scuffed with a red Scotchbrite pad to dull the coating and give the final finish a more natural look.
