Mix Small Batches and Mix Thoroughly

Proper mixing is essential to a successful Pond Shield application. Once
Part A and Part B are combined, the curing process begins immediately.
Accurate measuring, thorough mixing, and proper handling help produce a
consistent coating while preserving as much usable working time as possible.

Mix only the amount of Pond Shield you can comfortably apply within
approximately 20–30 minutes. Working time can vary depending
on temperature, batch size, project conditions, and how the mixed material is
handled after mixing.

and make sure the surface, tools, paint tray, rollers, brushes, and helpers are
ready.

Maintain the Correct 2-to-1 Ratio

Pond Shield is mixed at a ratio of two parts Part A to one part Part
B. The same ratio must be maintained whether mixing a full kit or a
smaller measured batch.

Use clean measuring containers and measure each component carefully. Do not
estimate the quantities by eye. An incorrect ratio can interfere with curing,
finished hardness, adhesion, and overall coating performance.

When mixing without alcohol, place two measured portions of Part A into the
mixing container, followed by one equal measured portion of Part B.

Mix for a Full Two Minutes

Mix the combined material thoroughly for a complete two minutes. Scrape the
sides and bottom of the mixing container throughout the process so unmixed
material is not left behind.

Move the mixing tool through the entire batch rather than stirring only in
the center. The finished mixture should appear uniform, with no visible
streaks or separate areas of Part A or Part B.

Rushing this step can leave partially mixed material in the cup. That material
may not cure or perform consistently after application.

Using Alcohol During Mixing

Alcohol is optional, but it can improve brush and roller application when used
correctly. Use only an approved alcohol such as:

  • 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol
  • Denatured alcohol
  • 180-proof vodka
  • Everclear

When using alcohol, begin with one measured portion of Part B. Add
approximately 1/8 to 1/4 cup of alcohol and mix them together.
Next, add two equal measured portions of Part A and mix the complete batch for
a full two minutes.

Do not use rubbing alcohol with a low alcohol percentage or products containing
oils, fragrances, moisturizers, or other additives.

Pour the Mixed Material Immediately

After mixing, immediately pour Pond Shield into a paint tray or directly onto
the prepared project surface. Do not leave the mixed batch sitting inside the
mixing container.

Epoxy creates heat as it cures. A deep mass of mixed material traps that heat,
which can cause the batch to cure rapidly and dramatically shorten working
time. Spreading the material into a shallow paint tray allows heat to dissipate
more effectively.

Keep Batches Manageable

Larger batches do not necessarily make the job faster. A batch that begins
curing before it can be applied may become difficult to roll, create uneven
coverage, or be wasted entirely.

Consider the size and complexity of the area being coated. Corners, vertical
surfaces, detailed features, and confined spaces may require smaller batches
than large open surfaces.

Use a fresh, clean mixing container for each batch. Do not scrape partially
cured material from an earlier batch into newly mixed Pond Shield.

Mixing Checklist

  • Maintain the correct 2:1 ratio.
  • Measure each component accurately.
  • Mix thoroughly for a full two minutes.
  • Scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container.
  • Mix only what can be applied within approximately 20–30 minutes.
  • Pour the mixed material into a paint tray immediately.
  • Never combine fresh material with a batch that has begun curing.

Important: Once Part A and Part B are
combined, the curing reaction begins. Have the project surface, paint tray,
rollers, brushes, and application team ready before mixing. Never leave mixed
Pond Shield standing in the mixing cup.
