Do Not Leave Mixed Material in the Mixing Cup
Once Pond Shield Part A and Part B are combined, a chemical curing reaction
begins immediately. That reaction generates heat. If the mixed material is
left sitting in a deep mixing container, the heat can build rapidly and cause
the batch to cure much faster than expected.
After Pond Shield has been mixed for the required two minutes, pour it
immediately into a paint tray or directly onto the prepared project surface.
Do not leave the mixed coating standing in the mixing cup while preparing
tools, moving equipment, or completing other work.

Why Mixed Epoxy Generates Heat
Pond Shield is a two-part epoxy coating. The curing reaction begins when Part A
and Part B are thoroughly combined. Heat produced by this reaction is normal,
but the shape and volume of the mixed batch affect how quickly that heat can
escape.
Inside a narrow mixing cup, the material remains concentrated in a thick mass.
Heat becomes trapped inside the batch rather than dispersing into the
surrounding air. As the temperature rises, the curing reaction accelerates,
which creates additional heat and shortens the available working time.
This is why a batch may appear workable immediately after mixing but become
hot, thick, or unusable only a short time later if it remains inside the cup.
What Can Happen Inside the Mixing Cup?
A large or unattended batch left in the mixing container may:
- Cure much faster than expected.
- Become extremely hot.
- Thicken before it can be properly applied.
- Reduce the available working time.
- Damage, soften, or deform the mixing container.
- Create wasted material and an incomplete application area.
Do not attempt to rescue material that has already become hot, thick,
stringy, or partially cured. Do not thin it further or combine it with a new
batch. Dispose of unusable material according to applicable product and local
disposal requirements.
Use a Paint Tray to Extend Working Time
A paint tray spreads the mixed coating into a wide, shallow layer. The larger
exposed surface area allows heat to dissipate more effectively than it can
inside a deep cup.
This does not stop the curing reaction, but it can help preserve usable working
time and make the coating easier to load onto a brush or roller.
Place the paint tray near the prepared application area before mixing begins.
As soon as the two-minute mixing period is complete, transfer the material
into the tray.
For certain areas, mixed Pond Shield may also be poured directly onto the

Prepare Everything Before Mixing
The safest and most efficient time to organize the project is before Part A
and Part B are combined.
Confirm that the following items are ready:
- The surface is completely prepared, clean, and dry.
- All cracks, joints, and repairs are complete.
- The paint tray is clean and positioned near the work area.
- Rollers, brushes, squeegees, and other tools are available.
- Protective equipment is being worn as required.
- Helpers understand their responsibilities.
- The application path has been planned.

Work in Small, Controlled Batches
Mix only the quantity that can be applied within approximately
20–30 minutes. Smaller batches are easier to manage and
reduce the chance that material will remain unused while curing.
Temperature also affects working time. Warmer conditions can accelerate the
reaction, while cooler conditions may slow it. Do not rely on the full
estimated working time when the project includes detailed areas, vertical
surfaces, corners, or difficult access.
Use a fresh mixing container for each batch. Never allow residue from a
previous batch to contaminate newly measured material.
If a Batch Begins Heating Rapidly
If mixed material becomes unexpectedly hot or begins curing rapidly, stop
using that batch. Keep it away from combustible materials and do not touch hot
material with unprotected skin.
Do not pour rapidly curing material back into either original product
container. Do not seal a hot or actively curing batch inside a closed
container.
Follow the Pond Shield Instructions, Safety Data Sheets, product labels, and
applicable disposal requirements.
Important: Pour mixed Pond Shield
immediately into a paint tray or directly onto the prepared project surface.
Never leave a mixed batch standing in the mixing cup. Concentrated epoxy can
generate substantial heat and lose usable working time very quickly.
